Are the hot springs open in winter?
Yes. The World Famous Hot Pools are open year-round, and the mineral water holds between 102 and 112°F regardless of the air temperature. Winter is the season the pools were arguably made for — the colder the air, the better the soak. Hours shift seasonally, so check before a late-evening visit.
Is winter a good time to visit Lava Hot Springs?
For soaking, it is the best time. Summer brings the crowds, the river tubing, and the Olympic Swimming Complex, but it also means sharing the pools. Winter strips the town back to what it was built around. Fewer people, steam rising off the water, and snow on the surrounding hills.
What is the difference between summer and winter here?
Summer is the busy season: tubing the Portneuf River, the Olympic Swimming Complex with its diving platforms and slides, and a downtown full of visitors. In winter the river and the summer complex close, the crowds thin out, and the hot pools become the whole point. Restaurants and shops downtown stay open.
What should I bring for a winter soak?
A warm robe matters more than you would think — the walk between the pool and the changing room is the cold part, not the water. Sandals you do not mind getting wet, a towel, and something to keep your hair off your neck. Everything else you can improvise.
Where should I stay for a winter trip?
Somewhere you can walk to the pools from. Driving to a soak in January means getting into a cold car with wet hair, which undoes most of the benefit. Our twelve suites are in downtown Lava Hot Springs, a short walk from the pools, and every suite has heating and a private bathroom. Seven have full kitchens, which matters more in winter when you are less inclined to go back out for dinner.
Is the drive safe in winter?
Lava Hot Springs sits in the Portneuf Valley off US-30, and the roads in are maintained through the winter. That said, southeastern Idaho gets real snow. Check conditions before you leave, give yourself extra time from Salt Lake or Boise, and do not plan on arriving late at night in a storm.
